The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Though Lord Miller supplied the building blocks, in the hands of less expert craftsman, the result feels piecemeal at best. Painfully disjointed opening vignettes could’ve used a bit of cohesive glue, and a few clever self-referential gags and reversals of cinematic expectation in third act don’t compensate for schizophrenic storytelling.

Casa de mi Padre

Brilliant idea gets lost in translation.  Ferrell’s Spanish is alarmingly good and the seriousness of his performance perfectly fits the premise, but the cinematic execution wavers between amusing and over the top.  Bernal y Luna tambien, have regular chemistry but weak roles and impress less than Aguillera’s awesome Bond song.

Zoolander

Stiller’s still quirky after naming himself most beautiful man alive. Ferrell finds forte as supporting man in fashion world. Film dons star-studded string of cameos and flaunts it like no other. Ultimately a hilarious movie with OK plot but lots of heart. Great quotes for those who don’t read good.

The Other Guys

Amusing buddy cop parody that flounders on story and runs every joke into the ground. Coasts on how stupid Wahlberg thinks everyone is, and Mendez helps with appropriately out of placeness. Plummets halfway through when focus shifts to story, but unlike Mace Windu and the Rock, the crash takes forever.
