Do Holograms Dream of Ephemeral Horses digs deeper into philosophical questions of its predecessor without terminating older model’s ambiguity. Astoundingly beautiful cinematography justifies extended Blade Runtime and occasionally over-obscure plot programming. Smart script runs the blade’s edge of pretension and afFords cast the opportunity to birth life from machination. Interlinked.

Arrival

Giant espresso pods descend on Earth and cleverly attempt communication with sleep-deprived scientists through a language of coffee mug stains. Cleverly cerebral sci-fi drama integrates better elements of Nolan and Jeff Nichols with heady high concepts of Arthur C. Clarke. Preaches trans-comic cooperation as Lois’ Language catches science Hawk’s Eye.

Sicario

Denis goes to un Estado Nuevo with morally ambiguous tale in which Benicio takes no bull but stealthily tunnels his way into leading role.  Characters seem childishly expressive, marking interesting contrast with secretive and adult world of the film.  Brilliantly understated cinematography bonds these prisoners to their colder northern cousin.

Enemy

Two Gyllenhalves of a Gyllenwhole circle each other while being haunted by Cronenberg’s subconscious spiders in this Kafka-esque masterpiece.  Brilliantly bleak cinematography and a melodramatic score perfectly compliment this eerie and ambiguous character study.  Previous films proved to be Villeneuve’s worst enemy as they imPrisoned his intended title: Double Darko.
