Enemy

Two Gyllenhalves of a Gyllenwhole circle each other while being haunted by Cronenberg’s subconscious spiders in this Kafka-esque masterpiece.  Brilliantly bleak cinematography and a melodramatic score perfectly compliment this eerie and ambiguous character study.  Previous films proved to be Villeneuve’s worst enemy as they imPrisoned his intended title: Double Darko.

Now You See Me

Leterrier tries transporting again with Ocean’s Prestige, an occasionally slick, mildly entertaining festival of irrational effects and grandiose camera moves.  Unfortunately, the plot points are too predictable and explanations too contrived for the arsenal of amusing performances to trick the audience with the illusion of intelligent scripting.  Now you won’t.

Beginners

Plummer and McGregor’s noses are perfectly cast as father and son in ambling epitome of indie flicks. The movie doesn’t really go anywhere or focus on anything, but it does so in an entertaining and endearing way. Plummer locks lips and therefore awards and Laurent re-appears alongside inglorious nice people.

Inglourious Basterds

Spaghetti western cooked by Tarantino and served on a Nazi plate. With occasional flashy exceptions (Samuel Jackson), Tarantino controls himself and does the genre justice. Pitt creates perfect Eastwood or Wayne-esque character alongside amazing lesser-knowns, Fassbender, Laurent, and Waltz. Contains Roth’s best directed film yet and a histourically accurette ending.
