Adaptation.

Writing fifty words about Adaptation.  Could be difficult.  Would have to be introspective and witty.  Cleverly self-referential perhaps.  Can’t employ Kaufman’s witty plot-structure.  Must handle subjective abstract concept in concrete form.  But that would be a boring review indeed.  No.  Brilliant editing! Ingeniously crafted!  Streep, Cooper, Cage and especially Cage!

The Dark Knight

Three performances unhindered despite facelifts, one makeup, one CG, and one re-casting.  Cleverly philosophical story transforms Bat into symbol that Begins began.  Thematic elements, dark vs. light, chaos vs. chance, etc. sometimes overwhelm a plot which keeps rebooting through the film.  Disappointing last page of Ledger in film and life.

Away We Go

Mendes’ attempt at indie feels like Wes Anderson turned Sideways. Krasinski and Rudolph evolve beyond TV comedy roots but drown in a sea of scrambled Eggers supporting characters. Overall an amusing but dissatisfying quasi-comedy that chokes itself with too much quirk. Gyllenhaal, Janney, and Gaffigan are uncharacteristically unimpressive. Indie music!

Crazy Heart

Bridges nails washed up Dude as country singer role in Tender Mercies/Wrestler hybrid. More surprising than Bridges’ impressive singing voice is Colin Farrell going country western. Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Sherrybaby again, this time as love interest. Mundanely poignant with an ending so emotionally mixed it’ll make your heart go crazy.
