Though the pace periodically drags and the style is rough as
concrete, the film isn’t nearly as painful as its title implies. Impressively
self-indulgent dialog blends beautifully with a plot structure that delights in
bucking its viewers. Less meat than Bone or Brawl, but Gibson’s self-aware performance delivers 100 percent.

Hacksaw Ridge
Gibson christifies Spielberg formula to deliver a movie that
is part saccharin romance, part gritty gore-fest, and 1/3 metal jacket.
Garfield revisits familiar territory with wall-scaling, web-slinging prowess
and aversion to murder. Meanwhile inVincible Vaughn leaves comedic convictions
stateside and sets of to crash Japan with a Band of Aussies.

Get the Gringo
Gibson pays back AD with directing gig and creates a fun
piece of escapist pulp. Self-indulgent
voiceover eventually gives way to excellent supporting characters with
endearing chemistry. Great cameos by
Hank Schrader and Mr. Eastwood plus solid action sequences, witty banter, and
clever diversions make Mexican Prison Break muy bueno.

The Beaver
Gibson pulls head out of ass and puts hand into Beaver. Foster’s directorial debut and Gibson’s
return to acting begs for jokes on multiple levels. His performance(s) is/are deeper and funnier
than the story itself. Beaver leaves
Lawrence and Foster wanting while Yelchin remains indie guy amidst frequent
warrior co-stars.

Anton Yelchin,
Jennifer Lawrence,
