Mission: Impossible - Fallout


The team reunites to do battle with predictably unpredictable superman, engaging in nuclear stunts, cleverly woven together into a cohesive and compelling story. Alarmingly plausible finale intercuts beautifully with emotional references to prior chapters, though action set piece antics cruise far above anything that this impossible franchise has done yet.

The Mummy


Even a Crowe character cameo hyding in plain sight can’t breathe life into this failed franchise resurrection attempt, though the effects departments do manage to imbue clouds of dust with more expression that a lead actor who appears to be running on Cruise control. Would be better left under wraps.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back


Cruise goes back to role easily within his creative reach, but Agent Smulders fails to equal long Gone female lead, and nameless baddie can hardly hope for Herzog’s gravitas. Impossibly predictable plot feels like unbourne Mission reject. Even fight scenes just lie there with Wicks unlit. Overall, comes up short.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation


Cruise takes flight in most aptly acronymed Mission yet. Features all the staples of the series but successfully tweaks them slightly so that the only thing which doesn’t feel fresh is our his face. Cleverly constructs an ending where the stakes are meaningful but plausible so any outcome seems possible.
