The Accountant

Jealous of Boston brother’s critical successes, Affleck assumes his Identities in Bad Bourne Hunting. The premise is a bit of a Reacher, but once the Wick is lit, this thriller burns steadily from start to finish. Contrived coincidences detract from complex plot, but capable cast make it all add up.

The Hangover: Part II

The Hangover Again, only this time it hurts. Phillips pukes this one out on its two year due date, and this underdeveloped clone struggles along the same path as its predecessor, never managing to outdo a single joke. On the bright side, the cast are still funny, if completely predictable.

Paul

Shaun and Fuzz team up again but without Wright everything goes wrong. The jokes fall flat, the plot is convoluted, and the character’s are mostly un-sympathetic. Kristen Wiig and the animating team responsible for CGI-ET are the films only saving graces. This Pineapple Express Encounter is less super than bad.

There's Something About Mary

Stiller and the Farrellys stir their collective quirkiness together and produce a comedy classic with enough memorable laughs to almost make up for their career mistakes. Plot meanders enjoyably, only occasionally straying too far, and a brilliant collection of quasi-cameos keep the insanity fun. Then surprise, an athlete and emotions!

Tangled

Disney returns to princess stories, and to making good movies sans Pixar, with this original Rapunzel adaptation. Picturesque paint style, rock-n-roll, and action adventure fuse into an odd animated Emperor’s New Knight’s Tale. Excellent film despite excessive voice-over, overly likeable and talented bad guy and weepy deus ex machina ending.

The Invention of Lying

Gervais finds the screenwriting pot-of-gold with this brilliant high-concept premise and then tosses it in the crapper, with alarmingly unclever story. Toes line of controversy but avoids leaping into it and disappoints with a disappointingly (and literally) Deus Ex Machina conclusion. All-star comedic supporting cast cannot support this film enough.
