The only thing not bent by this visual extravaganza is Benedict’s range as he narrowly alters his repertoire’s reality from Holmes to House. Relatively simple plot, direct exposition, and ironically two-dimensional characters leave plenty of room for Inceptional effects projected through Marvelous kaleidoscope. Wonderfully colorful despite strange whitewashing accusations.

The Martian

Saving Astronaut Damon is Scott’s first humans-only space epic and the cast, setting and result are stellar. Necessarily jettisons several of source’s set-pieces but remains loyal to the physics, the feel, and the fun.  Iron-ically cheesy finale and spaced out Glover are only detractors.  But Boromir explains Elrond to council!!!

12 Years a Slave

McQueen incorporates themes and realities of Hunger and Shame into masterful epic that chains his cinematic genius to a more conventionally narrative true story.  Ejiofor’s nuanced lead is perfectly served by empowered innocence of newcomer Nyong’o and impressively humanized inhumanity of Fassbender and Paulson, while producer Pitt plays weakest link.

Love Actually

Sprawling romantic comedy set on the corner of Magnolia and Notting Hill. Basically a fictionalized account of every single person in England on and around Christmas. Beautiful editing and writing create sublime mix of sincere sadness and hilarity. Easier to name British actors excluded rather than included. Uh… John Cleese?
