Deadpool 2

Silly sequel manages the impossible, resurrecting and raising the ridiculousness of the former film without stepping over the coke-line that the former had nearly fully snorted. Invincible franchise flick pratfalls into a series of alarmingly serious moments and yet never lets the irreverent tone drown in the pool of death.

Life

This prequel to Gravity features a team of Promethean ‘scientists’ struggling to use what they learned from watching Alien to defeat an invincible space critter. After series of truly terrifying sequences, Donnie Darko makes a last-ditch effort to oust the evil jello-packet by venting the station’s plot logic into space.

Deadpool

Ex-man movie dives into depths of its self-referential gimmick and comes up feeling fresh and new. Reynolds is resurrected from his history of comic failures, while Miller’s comedy gets lost amidst an entire movie of the same.  Unlike it’s hero, this film has a fantastic surface but tragically little beneath.

Adventureland

Mismarketed teen angst drama isn’t superbad, but satisfies somewhat.  Uncertain Eisenberg (in another 'land') leads Stewart halfway up ladder of decent acting, but she lets go to play with hair.  Reynolds seems out of place as the seven year student in this subdued Animal Park, but SNL leads support well.

Ted

Live action family guy complete with arbitrary and obscure referential cutaways.  Kunis and Wahlberg perform hilariously on their second date, and a strange cast of supporting stars distracts away from lamely straightforward plot and a few flat self-directed jokes.  Stupidly juvenile premise works great, but could have used heavier R.

Paper Man

Reynolds’ blue lantern is the highlight of Older Lars and the Unreal Guy. Kudrow and Daniels make a convincing Door in the Floor couple redux, and Emma Stone cements her status as the go-to indie girl. Clever cutting, heartfelt characters and a clever twist carry a sometimes overly redundant film.

Green Lantern

Reynolds is green with envy for all the decent superhero scripts as he fails to light a spark of enjoyability in this dim lantern. Effects unworthy of Pixar, and the dialogue makes Star Wars look like Shakespeare ensure that a film about manifesting the imagination completely fails to do so.

The Proposal

One of the most predictable films ever made but still fairly enjoyable. Reynolds and Bullock play excellently off each other as they leap through all the typical chick flick clichés. Nice to see Coach and Rose in something worthwhile again. Could have done without both of the strange dancing scenes.
