The Post


Equal parts history lesson and current events commentary, this President’s Men (and Women) prequel delivers a good lead but fails to follow it up compellingly. Hanks and Streep easily traverse their tiny character arcs, while lesser roles are occupied by TV regulars, all on a quest to break something bad.

Lady Bird


Genuine, heartfelt and Gretty, Lady Bird soars on updrafts of cool wit and warm sentimentality. Clever writing and perfectly nuanced performances keep this meandering slice of life from overflowing its banks. A misplaced bet on Hedges, family that never Letts go and a play-making drama teacher make the mundane wonderful.
