Nacho dips into Kaufman-esque surrealism with this monstrous tale of alcoholism and manipulation. Hatheway’s devastating performance grounds what could have been a farcical film, and phenomenal character arcs are perfectly crafted to span half the globe. Comedy and drama trade blows in an entertaining tonal battle for far-flung emotional impact.

Two Eds are not better than one in this Coen Brothers wannabe complete with Tim Blake Nelson. Both Nortons characters are over the top while the plot can hardly stand up. A couple of amusing jokes can’t help but emerge from the hodge-podge of super-quirky dialogue, and equally crazy action.
