Thor: Ragnarok
What We Do in the Cosmos plays Thor for laughs, but slips into
idiocracy for lengthy rags-to-rocks second act made entertaining by
gladiatorial Goldmaster. Blanchett’s character lacks the complexity of her
thorny performance. Psychedelic colors and Marvel’s first memorable music
assist endless ad-lib in delaying end (of world and film).

Doctor Strange
The only thing not bent by this visual extravaganza is Benedict’s
range as he narrowly alters his repertoire’s reality from Holmes to House. Relatively
simple plot, direct exposition, and ironically two-dimensional characters leave
plenty of room for Inceptional effects projected through Marvelous kaleidoscope.
Wonderfully colorful despite strange whitewashing accusations.

Four Lions
What We Do in the Jihad has a caddy almost mockumentary feel
that plays well for its tone and subject matter. Bumbling would-be terrorists
make for the most bizarre anti-heroes today, and once explosions raise the
stakes (or lamb as the case may be), the moral ambiguity becomes increasingly
complex.
