I, Tonya


Sweeping but gritty cinematography miraculously keeps pace with Robbie’s hard-hitting Harding rendition. Fascinating narrative structure lays brilliantly rocky rink for Allibastion Stanney to perform in. Overly pandering Tonya assault shot aside, if Coens and Scorsese teamed up to tackle skating, this icy-hot biopic would deserve (but not receive) higher scores.

Finding Dory


CG rollercoaster ride Weaves its way through the most ineptly maintained aquarium in history and a predictable plot that expends all of its emotional energy in the first big-eyed flashback. Ellen’s emphatic performance sustains long bouts out of water and ultimately makes for an enjoyable if underwhelming deep blue sequel.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children


Eva’s Xavier raises mutant misfits in dark shadows of time while bland Butterfield mopes around and stares Woodily at everything. Bizarre mix of digital and practical effects is almost as disconcerting as Jackson’s eyes, and ultimately no amount of hot air can make this plot-heavy ship float to the surface.
