Though upbeat music, outlandish performances and Miyazaki-esque visuals keep the tone light, this meaty monster movie never shies away from gritty, bruising realism. Incredibly emotive heroine perfectly contrasts caricaturish capitalists and the ending is dishearteningly heart-warming.
