Live by Night

Affleck’s Godfather doesn’t own the night in a film roughly as lively as a prohibition documentary. His wooden performance blends in perfectly with the muted Gray color palette and similarly sedated supporting stars. Interesting story, crisp dialog and bloody Tampans leave hope that Ben’s directorial success isn’t gone baby gone.

Moana

Pixar pieces together another perfect hero’s journey. Outstandingly beautiful animation, innovative characters and EGOT worthy music make this tried and true structure feel fresh from the sea. The tone shifts continuously with fluid ease, and the comedy beats are occasionally punctuated with perfect emotional darts. Even the voice acting Rocks!

Kong: Skull Island

Sam Jurassic says hold onto your buts. So… Fascinating fights between King Kurtz and apocalizards BUT vfx get crushed by videogame aesthetic. Stellar cast are assembled BUT their running faces are their best contributions to two-dimensional characters. Reilly’s Hopping mad loon is outstanding BUT emotional final scene doesn’t fit in.
