Sharp editing and pointed dialog compensate for kitschy character development and plot contrivances, while the dark magic of the vfx wizards keeps the kingdom enthralled until a lackluster ending brutally breaks plot rules and Law.

Though final mountainous level is a bit flat, Jumanji plays by its own rules and thus carries the comedy through to the finish. Black’s thunderous diva pairs perfectly with nervous nebula and soft Rock, while Hart is loveable as always. Peppered with amusing wrestler references including extended analysis of Johnsons.

Though upbeat music, outlandish performances and Miyazaki-esque visuals keep the tone light, this meaty monster movie never shies away from gritty, bruising realism.
