A Monster Calls


Yew won’t believe the simultaneous emotional depth and high-flying cinematics of the BFTree. Irish male version of Pan’s Labyrinth features a struggling youngster who invents fantasy foliage in order to cope with his Rogue mother’s death and the Alien accent of his grandmother. Brilliant animation leaves little to be desired.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Franchise moves forward by taking a step back. Cleverly regresses to high school roots while advancing past origin story restrictions. Perfectly integrates comedy, heart, and plenty of tie-ins to the MCU while standing strong as friendly neighborhood film. Technological plot-holes are easily patched by a webbing of nostalgia and innovation.

Life


This prequel to Gravity features a team of Promethean ‘scientists’ struggling to use what they learned from watching Alien to defeat an invincible space critter. After series of truly terrifying sequences, Donnie Darko makes a last-ditch effort to oust the evil jello-packet by venting the station’s plot logic into space.
